The Ifremer Repamo network (REseau de PAthologie des MOllusques) is the national surveillance network in charge of monitoring marine mollusc health on French coastlines. It is commissioned to enforce the official regulations and to provide a public service, under the supervision of the competent authority (DGAL Veterinary Directorate) in the Ministry.of Agriculture and Fisheries. Its goals are to prevent the introduction and the dissemination of infectious agents, in particular pathogens involved in reportable diseases, and to monitor the changes in the pathogens already present on the French coasts. |

This document presents the results obtained through the French Phytoplankton and Phycotoxins Monitoring Network (REPHY), concerning the presence of toxic and harmful phytoplankton species along the French coast, from 1984 to 1995. The network REPHY is briefly described. Then the different species, and their associated events, are reviewed : first, species toxic to shellfish consumers, e.g. Dinophysis spp. and Alexandrium minutum, which respectively produce diarrheic and paralytic toxins ; then, species which are toxic or harmful for marine fauna (fish, shellfish). The monitoring results are preceded by the main knowledge on taxonomy, distribution, biology, ecology and toxicity of the concerned species. A final synthesis illustrates the distribution of... |

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies offer new promise to support surveillance programs targeting marine non-indigenous species (NIS). Metabarcoding might surpass traditional monitoring methods, for example through its ability to detect rare species, a key feature in early detection of NIS. Another interest of this approach is the identification of organisms difficult to identify based on morphology only (e.g., early developmental stages), making it relevant in the context of management programs. Because many marine benthic NIS have a biphasic benthopelagic life cycle, targeting their pelagic larval stages in zooplankton may allow early detection and assessment of their establishment and potential spread. We illustrate this approach with an... |

Monitoring coastal contamination of trace metals using bivalve molluscs as quantitative bioindicators is widely used in many international monitoring programs. The bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from the interaction between physiological (growth, loss of weight, absorption, accumulation), chemical (metal concentration, speciation, bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature, SPM, chlorophyll). By utilizing the parameters above in this study, it appears that modeling metal dynamics in marine mussels is a reliable tool. The model allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. One of the objective of this study was to couple a... |

As a part of the Tigecycline Evaluation and Surveillance Trial (T.E.S.T.), Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial isolates were collected from 33 centers in Latin America (centers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela) from January 2004 to September 2007. Argentina and Mexico were the greatest contributors of isolates to this study. Susceptibilities were determined according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Resistance levels were high for most key organisms across Latin America: 48.3% of Staphylococcus aureus isolates were methicillin-resistant while 21.4% of Acinetobacter spp. isolates were imipenem-resistant. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase were reported in... |

The REPAMO is a French Network for the surveillance of Mollusc diseases that notably meets the obligations of the European Directive 2006/088/EC. It is entirely funded by the French State. The coordination of this network entrusted to the Institut Français de Recherche pour l`Exploitation de la Mer since 1986 aims at monitoring the notifiable endemic diseases, detecting the emergence of exotic or new pathogens and ensuring a minimum level of surveillance of the general health condition of molluscs. Beside IFREMER, different partners are involved in the surveillance of mollusc health at the national level: the Departmental direction for territories and sea who are the local representatives of the competent authority and the producers who have the obligation... |

This document describes and harmonizes detection methods of diarrheic (DSP) and paralytic (PSP) phycotoxins, for the laboratories of the Direction of Coastal Environment of IFREMER, which work in the framework of the French Phytoplankton and Phycotoxins Monitoring Network. These toxins, produced by a few phytoplankton species which regularly occur in sea water, accumulate in shellfish, which become toxic. Analysis is performed on an extract of digestive gland (DSP), or of total flesh (PSP), of shellfish. The described methods are meuse-tests, which are, at the present time, the only methods available to be used in the framework of a monitoring network. The method for diarrheic toxins is not standardized, with a threshold adapted for monitoring purposes. At... |
